Itamar Borochov
Itamar Borochov has made it his mission to bring the sacred sounds of his upbringing to a jazz quartet setting. Raised in the port city of Jaffa, Itamar started playing trumpet at age eleven. While he immersed himself in the discovery of jazz and the work of pioneering trumpet players such as Miles and Louis, he was continuously influenced by Middle Eastern and North African music which he heard in his local synagogue.
This is where his ever-expanding love for Sephardic music originated. Itamar eventually moved to New York to study jazz where he quickly established himself as a young innovator. Once back in Europe, he developed into an enthralling band leader and released three albums under his own name, presenting a careful balance between technical playing and storytelling, all the while staying true to his roots and musical upbringing. Itamar’s performance overwhelmingly convinced the jury and it is with great pride that we announce him as winner of the ‘RISING STARS’ Jazz Award 2020!
